Twelve Actions to Promote a Growth Mindset

We all carry a number of different mindsets. These are cognitive patterns we have on areas of our lives. They establish our thought positions (view points/assumptions/beliefs) but they need not be fixed. Few mindsets are more powerful than the growth mindset where we seek to improve, increase motivation, learn and grow. It helps us to be the best versions of our selves and avoid mental and emotional stagnation. Here are twelve habits we can adopt to enhance a growth :

  1. Ensure rest and recuperation. This will require regular sleep between 6-9 hours a day. Build in breaks during the day. Time away from screens and time alone.

  2. Plan healthy meals and drinks. Drinking more water and reducing salts and sugars will free the mind.

  3. Close each day by reflecting on what you have achieved. Review what went well that day and how you would like it to be better without levels of self-incrimination. Replay decisions, conversations and interactions. Welcome feedback, but build resilience with listening with a constructive ear.

  4. Start the day with gratitude. Reflect on what you are thankful for (regardless who you are thanking!). Repeat an affirmation such as "Everyday I am thinking more positively and growing".

  5. Make plans. Organise your day to be most effective for you. Know the difference between taking time to reflect and procrastination.

  6. Dream big. Set yourself a goal with targets. Consider the small steps needed starting with the first step. Visualise a different, better future.

  7. Exercise. Start and end the day with stretches. Build in a 30-60 walk or walks each day. Better if in nature.

  8. Take opportunities to learn new things. Write a journal to reflection ideas and reflections. Read fiction and non-fiction. Consider on line or local courses. use the internet to discover.

  9. Hold engaging conversations. Join discussions that challenge positively ideas and values.

  10. Meditate daily. At least take a few moments to be quiet and still. Be mindful of what is around you. Connect with yourself by noticing your breathing.

  11. Embrace change. Discipline to keeps to good habits and routines are important, but don't get stuck. Discover small changes such as a new route or something different to eat or read.

  12. Travel. Even if it is local, go to new places. Learn about them.
